What is Paint Touch-Up?

Touch-Up Problems

Shrinkage:  This problem has haunted the touch-up industry from the beginning.  Paint is about 80% solvents and as paint dries the solvents evaporate causing the paint to shrink.  As this

happens the paint in the chip pulls up around the edges or gets a dish shape making the chip obvious to the eye.

Adhesion: Getting the paint to stay on the vehicle has been a major problem.  With most paint touch-up’s after a few washes most of the just applied paint is gone.  This means that after a few days, or weeks the vehicle looks like it had never been touched-up.

Metallic color change: Over 80% of the vehicles on the road have metallic or pearl in their color.  Metallic and pearl separates from the paint pigments and settles on the bottom.  When paint is applied to the chip and the excess paint is removed the color is removed with the excess paint.

Results: The vehicle has silver or very light spots where the chips were, making it very obvious to the eye.

Dull finish: With most paint touch-up systems the finish of the paint is a dull finish.  This leaves dull spots in the finish or requires extra time polishing the vehicle to remove the dull appearance, however if you polish to much it sometimes removes the paint you just put in the chip.

Current Methods

Over the years there has been two common methods for paint touch-up, either airbrush or squeegee.  These methods paint in the chip and clean off the excess paint.  The finish wasn't important, the philosophy was 'just hide the chip.'   These are not the greatest methods, as the paint would just wash away with a few washes, but it served the purposes, until now.

Chapman's Method

To prevent Shrinkage, Chapman's uses an Enhancing Agent.  When added to the paint this agent greatly reduces shrinkage and gives the paint a better shine.  This allows 98% of the chips to disappear and you get a finish that you can be proud of!

Our Barrier Coat cleans the surface and leaves a microfilm that works with the Enhancing Agent to lock the paint into the chip, this aids in allivating adhesion problems.  This leaves vehicles that we have touched-up over 6 months ago looking the same as the day we touched them up.

The Metallic Modifier that we use locks in the color pigments, metallic and pearls together.  The high metallic and pearl colors stay the same color and blends in with the original factory color of the vehicle.

The Excess Paint Remover that we use to prevent dull finishes has special additives that leaves the vehicle with a finish that most of the time is better than the original, without polishing.  This leaves less mess and less time to finish the job.

chips, but we use the best products to get the best repairs, filling the chips  better than any system on the market.  In fact the only way to get a better job is to get a completely new paint job, and you probably could guess about how much time and money that requires.
The total job for Chapman's can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours depending on the condition of the chips.
